Waffle Warp Exploration

This was a continuation of my work exploring ways to evolve Vans iconic waffle outsole texture using parametric design tools and ideas. The work here would evolve into some of the early design work for the Vans Circle Vee.

Tools used: Illustrator/Modo/Rhino

I was using Kangaroo a physics simulator in Grasshopper to distort the diamond grid. The curves are used to define how the underlying grid is being influenced. Once the grid has been deformed, it’s transformed onto a 3D form to get a preview of how the design is working.

As the design evolved I was able to layer in more iconic Vans d.n.a. like diamonds in the back and hexes in the front (more durability).
